Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) 'Prairie Gold' is a cultivar of the native Aspen that was found naturally growing on the plains of Nebraska. While 'Prairie Gold' still features the form, distinct bark, and beloved quaking leaves that start green and turn a gorgeous yellow in the fall, it stands apart with its higher heat, drought, and humidity tolerance that the straight species. This allows the tree to be planted in lower elevation, hotter areas with far fewer disease and heat issues, although it should be noted that it will still maintain its natural suckering habit. Reduce suckering by making sure trees are adequately watered, amending the soil with beneficial fungi and bacteria, and reducing the stress of the plant by limiting competition and providing adequate sunlight. Aspens should also be planted where this suckering can be tolerated and the trees can form natural groves or strands away from lawn or other areas where they are a problem. Due to its disease tolerance, 'Prairie Gold' Aspen can be expected to live much longer than the straight species, even up to 50 years or more with proper care.
