Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) 'Blackhawks' is a standout native grass cultivar to provide drama and all-season interest in the landscpe. This warm-season grass will start out the year a dark green, begin turning purple around August, and deepen to nearly black by the mid-fall. This perennial glass is extremey low maintenance and very drought tolerant. We highly recommend waiting until late winter/early spring to cut this grass back to allow its black color to provide striking winter interest in your garden! Use as a specimen plant in beds or borders, mixed grass plantings, natural prairie plantings, rock gardens, on slopes or banks for stabilization, or as a shorter privacy screen. 'Blackhawks' is highly tolerant of urban pollution and suitable for city environments.
