Box Elder Maple (Acer negundo) 'Sensation' was a naturally occurring cultivar selected for its more controlled growth, improved branching, and sensational fall color. Since 'Sensation' is a male clone, it does not attract box elder bugs, but still provides many ecosystem benefits for pollinators and birds. It is an excellent shade tree and a great choice for larger landscape areas where a moderate growth rate is desired. Use as a focal point in the landscape, in woodland or shade plantings, or as part of privacy plantings or windbreaks. 'Sensation' will begin growing in a pyramidal form when young and spread wide as it grows. It is tolerant of urban pollution and suitable for city sites. It is also highly adaptable to different soil types.
