Desert Four O'Clock (Mirabilis multiflora) is a large and commanding perennial plant that spreads horizontally from a single large tap root. It features a showy display of vibrant, broadly tubular pink or magenta flowers that last all the way from June to September! The flowers open in the late afternoon and remain open through the night to attract hummingbirds and other day-time pollinators, as well as night-time insects. Four O'Clock is easy to grow, very drought tolerant, and extremely low maintenance. It will die back in freezing winters, but grow back from its large roots in the spring. Plant in xeric garden beds or borders, parkstrips, rock gardens, pollinator gardens, or on retaining walls or slopes for stabilization. Also makes a good groundcover. Four O'Clock is tolerant of urban pollution and suitable for city sites.
This plant is toxic if digested to people and pets.
