Golden Currant (Ribes aureum) is an attractive shrub with a long season of interest. Bright green, maple-like leaves appear in the spring, followed by clove-scented yellow flowers. These are followed by drooping clusters of edible currants, which can be eaten from the shrub or used in pies, jams, jellies, etc. The leaves will turn yellow, red, or orange in the fall. This shrub is an excellent choice for garden beds and borders, informal hedges and screens, woodland gardens, or natural or wildlife gardens. Although Golden Currant can handle partial shade (and will require less water there), the best fruit production will occur in full sun. Avoid pruning until after the flowers have bloomed, as the flowers bloom on the previous year's growth. It is tolerant of urban pollution.
