Western Snowberry (Symphoricarpos occidentalis) is an attractive and highly versatile, deciduous shrub. Attractive, gray-green to green foliage is accented in the summer by small, non-showy pink flowers which will give way to the white, ball-shaped fruits that remain on the plant during winter and give the shrub its name. These berries are not considered good eating by human or bird standards, and are best used for ornamental purposes. Western Snowberry is a suckering, multi-stemmed shrub that naturally spreads to form colonies and works best as an understory planting in woodland or shade gardens, hedge, background woody speciman to accent foreground planting, or stabilization on a slope for erosion control. It is highly versatile and can handle moist or dry conditions and full sun to full shade.
